Future workshops
Discussion of offering Data Carpentry Genomics in January or February as we have in the past. The group was concerned that we would encounter the same high registration / low attendance issues that we’ve dealt with recently.
Discussed possible strategies for incentivizing attendance, or at least getting an idea of the number of committed registrants: completing a token task to learn the workshop location, consequences for no-show such as automatic waitlist for a subsequent workshop, charging a nominal fee. Reminder that any of these strategies increases the administrative work of hosting the workshop.
Interest in Genomics since it is the only topic we consistently host at the same time every year. Various action items emerged for moving toward scheduling a workshop.
Other possible topics for next semester included elements of project management, e.g. Data Organization in Spreadsheets as a piece of broader project management skills.
We identified possible partners for workshops, where instructor/advisor/peer pressure could help with attendance. Based on the most recent workshop, people who registered earlier seemed less likely to attend than people who registered later - possibly something to keep in mind for releasing registration in the future.
